Redcar Bears chief has high hopes for new arrival Ben Morley

Pleased promoter Brian Havelock has tipped new signing Ben Morley to be a Premier League hit.

The Redcar Bears supremo was forced to make a late change to his team after Richard Hall declared last month he wouldn’t be riding for them after all.

But he’s now confirmed the capture of 20-year-old Southend-born Morley to fill the gap.

Morley gave some impressive performances for Lakeside Hammers in the Elite League last season as part of the fast track programme.

And Ecco Finishing Bears fans will remember him finishing second to Matt Williamson in the Julie Lewis Memorial individual meeting at South Tees Motorsports Park last May.

“Ben comes highly recommended by Len Silver,” said Havelock, “and that’s an endorsement that counts for a lot.

“He’s a young rider and he’s on the way up - there’s a lot of potential there.

“He had some good scores in the Elite League towards the end of last season and he did well when he rode up here.

“He loves the little tracks and I can see him improving his average.”

Getting a replacement for Hall at this late stage was always going to be a tough proposition and Morley, who arrives on an assessed three-point average, will line up at reserve with Rafal Konopka, as Jan Graversen moves into the top five.

“I think both Ben and Rafal are capable of showing improvement,” added Havelock.

The Bears promoter also revealed he had approached two overseas riders but commitments in the Polish League proved a stumbling block.

The Bears open their season with an A66 Trophy match at home to Workington on Thursday, March 26.
