Tributes pour in for 'gentleman of politics' after death of Middlesbrough's only Lib Dem councillor


Tributes have poured in for the only Lib Dem councillor in Middlesbrough who died last night.


Cllr Maelor Williams represented the Stainton and Thornton ward from 1999 and was chairman of Middlesbrough and East Cleveland Liberal Democrats.


Middlesbrough and East Cleveland Liberal Democrats posted on its Facebook page: “We are deeply saddened by the news that Maelor Williams, Lib Dem Councillor for Stainton & Thornton and Chair of our local party, has died this evening at James Cook Hospital after a short illness.


“A man of immense integrity, he will be deeply missed by us all.”


Deputy mayor Cllr Dave Budd posted on Twitter late last night: “Saddened to hear that Cllr Maelor Williams passed away tonight.


“He was a man of principle who will be sorely missed in the council chamber.”


Lib Dem Chris Foote Wood, who stood as a Liberal Democrat candidate for Middlesbrough mayor in 2011, tweeted: “My very good friend Maelor Williams has died. Sad to lose him, glad to have known him, proud to have been his friend.”
