A Question of Boro: Players past and present test out their knowledge

Legends pip current players in quiz night to raise funds for the MFC Foundation

Boro footballers past and present lined up for a battle of the brains last night.

Former and current Middlesbrough players took part in a quiz to test their sporting knowledge.

A Question of Boro brought together some of the best elements of TV favourites A Question of Sport and A League of Their Own.

The fun quiz night, held at the Riverside Stadium, was raising funds for the MFC Foundation (MFCF).

The event was hosted by Real Radio’s Gary Philipson and took place in the Legends Lounge.

And in the blue corner were legends Gary Pallister, Steve Vickers, Neil Maddison and Jim Platt.

In the red corner were the new boys, Rhys Williams, Jason Steele, Lee Tomlin and Danny Graham.

Beforehand the old boys were confident of victory, with Gary saying: “We have seen the opposition.”

He joked that they had an added advantage thanks to Jim Platt’s knowledge of the 1930s.

After the players took their seats in front of the audience, host Gary Philipson quipped: “How much would they all be worth on the pitch now? £500,000 at least.”

The legends got off to a flying start and were soon leading the current players 9-1.

And they increased their lead to 18-10 after a wheelchair basketball challenge, in which both teams scored nine points.

As in A Question of Sport, they had the opportunity to answer both home and away questions.

And the Legends won through in the end by 61 points to 60.

All funds from the night were going towards funding MFCF’s wide-ranging community programme.

MFCF is Middlesbrough Football Club’s independent charity, set up by chairman Steve Gibson in 1996.
