Peter Stephenson aims to show mettle on the Brick and Steel Rally

Able UK chief Peter Stephenson and co-driver Ian Windress go for glory in the Brick and Steel Border Counties Rally

Billingham businessman Peter Stephenson is among the top seeds for Saturday’s Brick and Steel Border Counties Rally.

The Able UK chief and co-driver Ian Windress from Northallerton go for glory in the Jedburgh-based event which has attracted a big and formidable field.

Stephenson was second in last year’s SG Petch ANECCC Championship, just four points behind winner Steve Bannister, and will be looking to get some points on the board this weekend.

Guisborough navigator Mike Scrimgour is hoping for better luck as he prepares for his Border raid with Dave Wallbank.

Driver Wallbank hopes to have his Escort Mark II rebuilt after rolling the car on this year’s Riponian Rally.

They also have a debt to pay as they crashed out of the Brick and Steel on the third stage last year.

In total the event will comprise 44 competitive miles, over five stages, and with central servicing off the main C200 road through Kielder Forest there will be less than 90 road miles.

Meanwhile plans are coming along nicely for this year’s Trackrod Rally Yorkshire.

The famous North Yorkshire forest stages are again set to reverberate to the roar of rally cars from all eras when the Trackrod Historic Cup, the Trackrod Forest Stages and the Armstrong Massey Land Rover Challenge take place on September 26 and 27.

The Trackrod Historic Cup forms the climax of the seven-round West Wales Rally Spares RAC Rally Championship and penultimate round of the Motoscope Northern Historic Rally Championship.

Scrutineering for all competitors in the Historic Cup and Land Rover Challenge, which will include members of the Armed Forces Rally Team and follows immediately afterwards, takes place on Friday afternoon.

Those crews will then start their events by illuminating the forests as they undertake probably two stages after dark.

Competitors will restart on Saturday morning from Pickering Showground, undertaking a total of approximately 55 competitive miles, before the first car is due back at the same venue at approximately 1.30pm.

The Trackrod Forest Stages forms round eight of the always well-supported REIS BTRDA® Rally Series plus a round of numerous regional championships, with all competitors having their cars scrutineered on Friday afternoon/evening before starting, again from the Pickering Showground, on Saturday morning.

The first car is expected to arrive back at the finish at the Pickering Showground late in the afternoon, after approximately 44 miles of competitive action in the classic forests of Cropton, Gale Rigg, Dalby, Langdale.

All events are to be based at Pickering Showground, on the A169 a mile south of the town centre, which accommodates Rally Headquarters, scrutineering and documentation, and a centralised service area.

A dedicated awards ceremony for each rally will take place soon after the last car has finished.

Servicing of vehicles on all events will take place after a maximum 20 competitive forest miles, hence management vehicles will not be allowed, and road mileage between stages will also be kept to a minimum.
