Match preview: Marske United v Boro Under-21s

Marske United boss Carl Jarrett is plotting a cup upset tonight but admits the Northern League title is his priority this season.

The Seasiders take on a Boro XI at Central Avenue, Billingham (7.30pm) in what should be a closely-fought quarter-final tie.

Boro winger Mustapha Carayol is expected to start for Paul Jenkins’ side, which will be mix of Under-21 development and under-18 players.

Carayol played 58 minutes in Boro Under-21s’ defeat at Brighton a fortnight ago, but will be keen for further competitive action after the young guns’ scheduled league match with Wolves on Friday fell victim to the weather.

Marske chief Jarrett plans to make full use of his strong first team squad, though hinted former Boro winger Cameron Park may not be involved due to a lack of fitness.

“The match is a break from the league for our players,” said the Marske boss.

“With us chasing the title in Division One, every game is a pressure game, so a cup tie is a pleasant change.

“That doesn’t mean we will be taking it easy. But we have a strong, 20-man squad and it’s a chance to give a few players a run out and for me to have a close look at some of the lads.”

Marske are third in the Division One table, two points adrift of leaders West Auckland with three games in hand.

United go into the game on the back of successive 4-0 league victories and Jarrett is hoping to make it three wins in a row.

“There’s no doubt the league is our priority this season, but that doesn’t mean we don’t want to win a cup competition and if it happens to be the North Riding Senior Cup then great.”

Boro Under-21s’ next league game is against Blackburn on Monday, February 23.
