Trains cancelled as 'horses are on line' between Middlesbrough and Darlington

Train services between Middlesbrough and Darlington have been suspended amid reports that horses have been hit by a train.

Northern Rail has confirmed that animals are on the line near Dinsdale, outside of the County Durham town, and services have been cancelled.

Buses have been requested to run between Middlesbrough and Darlington - extending journey times by up to 30 minutes.

These buses were expected to be in place by 8.30am.

Reports from witnesses say that up to seven horses may have been hit by a train.

There is no estimate yet as to how long disruption will last - but it is likely to continue until at least 10.30am.

The Saltburn to Darlington line takes in various Teesside stations including Redcar, Thornaby, Eaglescliffe, Marske, Saltburn and Middlesbrough.
