Ben Gibson: 'Players are to blame for Hillsborough defeat - not the formation'

Ben Gibson says the players are to blame for Saturday’s disappointing defeat - not the formation.

Aitor Karanka made five changes and reverted back to a 3-5-2 system at Hillsborough, but that was later ditched as Sheffield Wednesday eased into a 2-0 lead.

With Boro missing the chance to go top of the Championship, defender Gibson bemoaned the team’s display - but insisted it was nothing to do with his manager’s team selection.

“It was a tough afternoon. You can’t really pass the ball around (on the pitch) as it’s got so many bobbles, but it’s not an excuse,” Gibson said.

“(The 3-5-2) is obviously a little bit different but you’re still playing as a centre half, just a bit wider.

“The idea was to try and deal with the way they would play, the pitch and their big striker (Atdhe Nuhiu) getting around the second balls.

“Unfortunately it didn’t suit us that well but that was down to us - not the tactics.”

The result means Boro have now lost two of their last three matches - but Gibson has reassured fans that the wheels are not coming off their promotion push.

“There’s no need to be worried,” Gibson added.

“We’re up there on merit. There’s a long way to go, this league is a rollercoaster and there will be a lot more ups and downs to come yet.”
