A19 at standstill after lorry overturns with strong winds set to continue to batter Teesside

Live: Breaking news, traffic and travel across Teesside

The A19 is at a standstill after strong winds caused a lorry to overturn early this morning.

High winds are set to continue to batter Teesside today, with forecasts warning the wind could reach 50mph this afternoon.

Police were called to the A19 southbound at around 4.30am when a lorry blew over at the Leven Viaduct near Kirklevington.

One lane is still closed causing a traffic standstill in both directions.

Police say the southbound carriageway will be closed from 10am in both directions for approximately one hour to recover the lorry - but only if the wind has died down.

The closure will be at the junction with the A174.

Disruption on surrounding routes, particularly Leven Bank and Yarm, should be expected.

Police were also called to the A1 near junction 60 at Sedgefield at about 4.15am, again after a lorry overturned on the southbound carriageway.

The A66 from Scotch Corner to Cumbria has been closed to high sided vehicles in both directions.

Heavy rain is also set to fall across Teesside later today, with snow and sleet possible on higher ground in North Yorkshire, with temperatures only hitting 5C.
