Plans for a solar farm in Guisborough which could provide enough energy for 1,300 homes are set to go on display.
Lightsource Renewable Energy wants to develop the project on land at Woodhouse Farm, near Middlesbrough Road in Guisborough, just off the A171.
The company is now inviting residents to get involved with the plans at a community information evening.
Conor McGuigan, planning and development director at Lightsource, said: “Solar farms are able to produce both clean energy and food simultaneously.
“This is largely due to the fact that the infrastructure of the solar farm actually takes up less than 30% of the allocated area, leaving the rest of the space as open grassland.
“Consequently, small livestock, such as sheep, chickens and geese, can be easily accommodated on site.
“It’s this ability to have a dual-use of land that makes solar energy such a viable prospect for our future energy needs.”
Solar Farm Site in Guisborough
If plans are successful, the farm could create enough energy to take 500 family cars off the road.
The company say that as solar panels would reach a maximum height of just 2.5m, visual impact will be kept to a minimum.
The existing trees and hedgerows around the site would be retained and managed as part of the project and Lightsource will also be looking to enhance the surrounding vegetation where needed. Lightsource also said properties in Guisborough should not be able to see any panels, and there will be limited views from the footpath to the north of the site.
Mr McGuigan continued: “This project presents a great chance for the local community to get involved and we would welcome ideas from local people to help refine the plans for the site. We would also encourage anyone who can’t attend the community event to visit our website where the plans can be viewed and suggestions for the proposals can be put forward.”
The community information session starts on Thursday April 2, at Sunnyfield House on Westgate in Guisborough, from 5.30pm until 8pm.
